The Art of Negotiation focuses on encompassing relevant transversal skills which can lead to successful performance in any field of work and life. Negotiation is a process that can occur consciously or subconsciously almost every minute of the day. Therefore, establishing differences between negotiation and arguing will introduce the trainees into the very art of negotiation. Specific negotiation elements will be explained in order to highlight a very important difference between negotiation which is a complex process of attempting to reach a solution, as opposed to arguing when you are just sharing your own point of view. Furthermore, the module will shed some light on situations which require negotiation to take place, since not everything is negotiable. In order to truly understand the negotiation process, goals and outcomes will be discussed briefly, focusing on outcomes as a possible win-win or win-lose situation. Once the trainees have been made familiar with the basics of negotiation, specificities of negotiation styles will be presented. In this phase the trainees will start recognising some similarities and differences in their negotiation strategies, and will probably perceive themselves as a specific type of negotiator. Finally, the module will cover some of the most known negotiation strategies, highlighting that not each negotiation will result in a win-win situation, and that sometimes “walking away” might turn out to be the best alternative.
